One Vote, Two Vote, I Vote, You Vote

written by: Bonnie Worth1vote-2vote

The Cat in the Hat looks at how we vote, why we vote, and who we vote for! In simple rhyme, the Cat in the Hat introduces early readers to the concept and practice of voting—with a focus on the American presidency! Learn the basic principles of democracy, how political parties are formed, why Election Day is held in early November, and much, much more! An ideal choice for reading and talking about elections (whether for a classroom pet or the leader of the free world).

In the Classroom:

  • Growingvoters.org provides teachers and parents with an array of free lessons and activities for grades K-12!
  • Educationworld.com offers links to multiple election activities and lesson plans to help your student learn more about the election process, from campaigning to the electoral college.

petes-dragonwritten by: Elizabeth Rudnick

When a young boy named Pete gets lost in a gigantic forest, he forms an unforgettable friendship with a giant flying dragon named Elliot. Based in the world of the film Pete’s Dragon, this original story features original illustrations, explores Pete and Elliot’s adventures and struggles in the forest and tells the tale of the lost years not shown in the film.

In the Classroom:

  • Disney has released a free petes-dragon-activity-packet for teachers and parents to use with their students.
  • After reading the book you could ask the students to then write a story on what it would be like for them to have a pet dragon.
