Posted by on Feb 24, 2014 in Holidays/Events, Language Arts | 0 comments

We’ve all read it at some point or another, Shel Silverstein’s powerful book The Giving Tree celebrates 50 years of teaching the power of love and sacrifice. His second children’s book, The Giving Tree is still Silverstein’s best selling book.

Shel Silverstein was born into a Jewish family in Chicago, Illinois in September of 1930. He was drafted in to the Unite States Army in 1953, ten years later Silverstein published his first children’s book: Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. The following year Silverstein published the wildly popular The Giving Tree. Silverstein publish 11 children’s books before his death in May of 1999.

WHEN I AM GONE
When I am gone what will you do?
Who will write and draw for you?
Someone smarter—someone new?
Someone better—maybe YOU!

Growing up  I loved reading Shel Silverstein. My favorite thing to do was, and is, reciting poems I have memorized from his books. My sister and I would go back and forth reciting our favorites. I have used The Giving Tree multiple times as an example of sacrifice, love, and kindness.
